POSITION: Campaign Organizer
EMPLOYMENT TYPE: Part-time Contract
REPORTS TO: Policy & Advocacy Director
HOURS: 12.5 hrs/week; 25 hrs/pay period
COMPENSATION: $22/hr
LOCATION: Atlanta, GA; Hybrid due to COVID-19 precautions; Must be located in the Atlanta area to attend weekly in-person staff meetings and check-ins (check-ins are at your discretion on whether you want them to be in person or virtual)
EMPLOYMENT PERIOD: September 3, 2024 – May 31, 2025

About SPARK

Founded in 2007, SPARK Reproductive Justice NOW (SPARK) builds and strengthens the power of our communities and a reproductive justice movement that centers Black Women and Queer & Trans Youth of Color in Georgia and the South. Based in Atlanta, Georgia, we have fostered a dynamic, collaborative model of advocacy, leadership development, collective action, and discourse that creates change and impact for Black women and queer people’s struggles for reproductive justice.

SPARK serves as an entrypoint and leadership pipeline for new social justice leaders, and a political home for Black women and young people, centering Black queer women, trans folx and folx living outside the gender binary. We utilize arts, culture and media to build resources for and shift narratives about our communities. SPARK engages in power building through grassroots organizing, advocacy, knowledge-building, and political development of its base and members in Georgia and across the US South.

 

Position Summary

Reporting directly to the Policy & Advocacy Director and Organizing Director, the campaign organizer is responsible for mobilizing SPARK’s dynamic base of Black women and Queer, Trans, and Gender Expansive young people of color, galvanizing members, organizations, and communities to lead and win community-centered campaigns to increase awareness, build knowledge, visibility, power, and leadership for reproductive justice. This position requires the ability to respond to the immediate threats our communities are facing (direct actions and mobilizations) while building towards lasting, social change (civic engagement, political education, health education, and leadership development).

The Campaign Organizer is responsible for organizing, base-building, and mobilization around SPARK’s key issue and policy based campaigns. Some duties include: outreach, recruitment, and engagement, leadership development, campaign strategy, and alliance-building. This position’s emphasis is outreach, mobilization, and deep listening and relationship building that result in member involvement and helping to develop a base of new leaders.

The Campaign Organizer will also help broaden our positive power building approach to a broader social and reproductive analysis and cross-movement approach to reach and strengthen the impact of our successes in grassroots organizing and advocacy.

Core Competencies

  • Strong grassroots community organizing skills or demonstrated success in organizing, strategizing, and following through on organizing projects. 
  • Experience  in leading and training others in community engagement tactics (door knocking, phonesbanks, street teams)
  • Ability to mentor and/or work directly with youth.
  • Working knowledge of local politics and relationships with GA local and state leaders
  • Bring a positive presence, reliable leadership, and enthusiasm for the SPARK mission and vision to community meetings, task forces, and other strategic sites.
  • Excellent individual and group communication skills (written and verbal); ability to apply these skills across a range of relationships and environments, including with youth and young adult program participants, co-workers, and other colleagues in the field.
  • Ability to handle a variety of projects and assignments at once with attention to detail.
  • Excellent time management, project management, and delegation skills and willingness to embrace adaptability. 
  • Steadfast commitment to collective liberation and ability to speak and unite those behind SPARK’s mission and vision
  • Access to reliable transportation
  • Skilled in both direct and indirect outreach
  • Ability to apply creative and critical thinking to improve existing programming.
  • Skilled in digital organizing and online mobilization
  • Utilizing arts, culture and media to build resources for and shift narratives about our communities
  • Knowledgeable about Reproductive Justice and working with a Queer framework 
  • Strong data management skills, able to maintain a database of contacts and members. 
  • Ability to support/assist community members with leadership development.

Duties and Responsibilities

Base Building & Outreach 
  • Mobilize, galvanize, engage and build out our SPARK base
  • Identify individuals who show potential for deep engagement and leadership and hold 1-on-1 person meetings to develop them as members
  • Maintain a database to track members/participants and progress towards achieving success indicators.
  • Ability to show up and show out for community, participate in partner meetings, and bring a Black, Queer and Trans liberation lens to the work with partner meetings, strategies, policies,  and collaborations
  • Maintain regular communication with base phone, email, text messaging, etc.
  • In partnership with the community organizer, lead on efforts to develop and implement direct outreach and recruitment tactics (canvassing, phonebanks, community events, tabling, etc.)
  • Participate in fundraising and administrative activities as required
Campaign Organizing 
  • Facilitate youth and adult organizing campaigns, including curriculum, training, and program development.
  • Work alongside members to identify and launch new organizing campaigns to transform working conditions and lives of Black queer and trans folx and people living outside the gender binary.
  • Support overall team efforts to lead outreach for local campaign engagement, and rapid response mobilizations
  • Work with Policy and Campaigns Director to implement campaign strategy
  • Coordinate civic engagement campaigns and activities, including overseeing canvassers and volunteers
Power Building Campaigns  
  • Work alongside members to identify and launch new organizing campaigns to transform working conditions and lives of Black queer and trans folx and people living outside the gender binary.
  • Work with Policy and Campaigns Director to implement campaign strategy – Coordinate civic engagement campaigns and activities, including overseeing canvassers and volunteers
  • Sustained fights (beginning, middle, end) to win concrete policy and institutional change on issues that impacts our base.
Data Management
  • Effectively enter and track data for current and new contacts 
Leadership Development
  • Directly support the development of emerging members and volunteers’ leadership capacity to engage in and lead SPARK’s campaigns and programs
  • Support leadership development programs

Qualifications

  • Strong commitment to an intersectional social justice movement including but not limited to reproductive justice, racial justice, economic justice, Black/queer liberation, and organizing in the South
  • 2+ years experience with community organizing, base building, and outreach with diverse communities especially women of color, trans people, queer people, and  Black, indigenous youth of color; Experience with campaign development and implementation with clear goals and results
  • Familiarity with public policy, advocacy, and grassroots lobbying and campaign development
  • Proficiency in Slack, Zoom, and other team communication apps
  • Proficiency with Google Workspace
  • Proficiency with social media platforms (i.e Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Clubhouse, etc.)
  • Creative problem solver who can meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Wants to be a part of an incredible family of activists who work hard, play harder, and are committed to transforming Georgia and the South
  • Flexibility to work nights and weekends as needed
  • Ability to travel, as needed
  • As aforementioned this position will begin as a remote one and as such you should be well versed in digital organizing and familiar with strategies for effective virtual engagement 
  • Must be based in Georgia
