About SPARK

Founded in 2007, SPARK Reproductive Justice NOW (SPARK) builds and strengthens the power of our communities and a Reproductive Justice movement that centers Black Women and Queer, Trans and Gender Diverse Youth of Color in Georgia and the South. Based in Atlanta, Georgia, we have fostered a dynamic, collaborative model of advocacy, leadership development, collective action, and discourse that creates change and impact for Black women and queer people’s struggles for reproductive justice.

SPARK serves as an entrypoint and leadership pipeline for new social justice leaders, and a political home for Black women and young people, centering Black queer women, trans folx and folx living outside the gender binary. We utilize arts, culture and media to build resources for and shift narratives about our communities. SPARK engages in power building through grassroots organizing, advocacy, knowledge-building, and political development of its base and members in Georgia and across the US South.

Position Summary

In honor of SPARK’s former Board Chair, Heidi Williamson, a political strategist who centered the most marginalized in cultural conversations, SPARK seeks a Shifting Power Organizer to carry on the legacy of Heidi’s work. The Shifting Power Organizer engages leaders to change policy by changing narratives. Reporting to the Policy & Advocacy Director, this role shifts power by organizing and developing leaders within SPARK’s policy campaigns to show up as experts in their own lived experiences, share their stories, and grow as leaders. Engaging the most directly impacted, campaign volunteers, and other stakeholders, the Shifting Power Organizer is responsible for mobilizing SPARK’s dynamic base of Black women and Queer, Trans, and Gender Expansive young people of color. They will galvanize volunteers, organizations, and communities to lead and win community-centered campaigns while strategically building awareness, knowledge, visibility, power, and leadership for reproductive justice. This position requires the ability to respond to the immediate threats our communities are facing (direct actions and mobilizations) while building towards lasting, political and cultural change (civic engagement, political education, storytelling, and leadership development).

Core Competencies

  • Strong grassroots community organizing skills or demonstrated success in organizing, strategizing, and following through on organizing projects.
  • Utilizing arts, culture and media to build resources for and shift narratives about our communities
  • Experience in leading and training others in community engagement tactics (door knocking, phonesbanks, street teams)
  • Working knowledge of local politics and relationships with GA local and state leaders
  • Willingness and ability to be physically present at state and local legislatures/decision making bodies to support Speak Justice Take Action programming during and beyond legislative session
  • Bring a positive presence, reliable leadership, and enthusiasm for the SPARK mission and vision to community meetings, task forces, and other strategic sites.
  • Excellent individual and group communication skills (written and verbal); ability to apply these skills across a range of relationships and environments, including with youth and young adult program participants, co-workers, and other colleagues in the field.
  • Ability to handle a variety of projects and assignments at once with attention to detail.
  • Steadfast commitment to collective liberation and ability to speak and unite those behind SPARK’s mission and vision

  • Ability to apply creative and critical thinking to improve existing programming.

Duties and Responsibilities

Base Building & Outreach

  • Develop, support, and implement strategies to engage SPARK’s base meaningfully in our campaigns and programs
  • Support overall team efforts to lead outreach for local campaign engagement, and rapid response mobilizations
  • Foster a base that has the shared vision to act together to build power, challenge power, and change power relationships and communities.
  • Collaborate with the Organizing Team to plan and connect new and existing base members to campaign work and coordinate volunteer participation in gatherings, programs, and initiatives
  • Support efforts to deepen relationships with partner organizations and other critical partners, seeking opportunities for solidarity and collaboration
  • Develop relationships with emerging and potential volunteers and members through 1 on 1 conversations, direct engagement, and intentional follow up
  • In partnership with the Organizing Team, lead on efforts to develop and implement direct outreach and recruitment tactics (canvassing, phonebanks, community events, tabling, etc.)

Campaign Organizing

  • Participate in the creation of campaign strategy while leading the organizing pieces of specific campaigns balancing national and local priorities.
  • Ensure that campaigns are rooted in equity and justice and are inclusive of frontline and directly impacted communities.
  • Develop and carry out individual campaign organizing plans, including tactics, research, engagement strategies, volunteer integration, and partnerships.
  • Weave individual campaigns with other key organization strategic initiatives to ensure unified organizing in the state.
  • Work alongside staff and volunteers to identify and launch new organizing campaigns to transform working conditions and lives of Black queer, trans, and gender expansive folx.
  • Support overall team efforts to lead outreach for local campaign engagement, and rapid response mobilizations
  • Coordinate civic engagement campaigns and activities, including overseeing canvassers and volunteers

Arts, Culture, and Storytelling

  • Center and value arts, culture, and storytelling in organizing approach 
  • Implement culture shifting strategies and tactics in campaign spaces

Leadership Development

  • Coordinates with the Organizing Team to support volunteer leadership development and organizing metrics.
  • Supports and trains volunteers on organizing skills and developing issue expertise.
