A Message from SPARK RJ NOW!: Anti-Trans Bills and How We’re Fighting Back

Since the start of the 2025 Georgia Legislative Session, the legislature has introduced a series of bills aimed specifically at the Trans community. These bill range from aiming to ban Trans children from playing school sports at “every level” (in the legislators’ own words), to changing insurance plans so that public service workers won’t receive Medicaid coverage for gender-affirming care.

One of SPARK’s main priorities has, and will continue to be, lifting up and being a voice for Trans folx in the legislature; the 2025 legislative session will be no different.

Although there has been push back against these harmful bills, and some legislation in support of the Trans community is being introduced, it is still clear that there is a targeted attack on every aspect of Trans folx’ lives.

Anti-Trans Bill to look out for:

SB 30: Prevent puberty blockers from being prescribed or administered to minors. This is the second session this bill has been introduced and currently it has not left the Senate.

SB 1: “Fair and Safe Athletic Opportunities Act” – This bill would prohibit Trans students from playing on the team aligned with their gender. This bill has recently passed through the Senate and is currently being heard by the House.

SB 74: Book ban that excludes material featuring topics on gender expression and the LGBTQIA community from public school libraries.

HB 267: “Riley Gaines Act” – This bill would force students to use restrooms based on their assigned gender at birth (in the bill this is referred to as “sex”), would restrict sleeping arrangements on field trips based on that assigned gender, and would impose a fine on schools that do not comply. The bill has recently moved to House Second Readers.

SB 39: Bans state insurance coverage for gender affirming care. This would impact any person who receives Medicaid. There was recently a hearing on the bill on 2/11, but the bill has recently passed through Senate.

Bills supportive of the Trans Community:

HB 221: A direct response to SB 1, this bill would restrict schools from creating sport teams based on gender. This bill is still in the House.

SB 41: [Senate version of HB 221] This bill would provide equal athletic opportunities for public school students; focuses on overall equality. and is currently still in the Senate.
